RECOMMENDED CARE

Tiles should be sealed when used in wet areas. When cleaning, use a non-abrasive cloth and a non-abrasive cleanser. Unless tiles are rated as frost resistant, do not install tiles outdoors in areas subject to frost.

HANDMADE TILE

Due to the nature of the raw materials and the production methods used for handmade ceramic art tile, some variation in size, color and surface from batch to batch is not only expected but enhances the beauty of the tile and the finished installation. The finished tile order may vary from the previously ordered color sample. Crazing, which is the development of small surface cracks in the glaze, may occur and is not considered a defect. All tile designs are the copyrighted works of Moore-Merkowitz Tile, Ltd. and/or Susan Moore and Neil Merkowitz. All rights reserved. View our complete Online Purchase-terms and conditions.

3. Why are your tiles considered art tiles?

We are trained ceramic artists committed to making beautiful tiles for artistically inspired interior spaces. All of our tiles are created and made by hand using artistic processes and techniques in the studio arts tradition. Our studio is the heart of our business, a steady pulse of creativity, passion and artistic intention. Nestled in a renovated 1880s barn in the New York countryside, it was formerly the studio of renowned ceramic artist Robert Turner, and has been the origin of ceramic art for more than 70 years.

4. Are all of your tiles made in the United States?

Yes. All of our tiles are handmade by artisans in our renovated 1880’s barn in New York State. We use 100% renewable energy to fire our kilns and in all of our manufacturing processes. Our Curated Field Series tiles are made the United States, and are shipped separately.

5. What glaze finishes do you offer?

We offer glossy, satin gloss, and matte glaze finishes. In total, we offer 150 glaze colors, from glossy to matte finishes, in six different color series. See our Glaze Colors page.

6. Can we mix and match tile designs from different tile series?

Yes, for a unique, customized design, mix and match series, moldings and trims. In addition, many of the decorative tile series have corresponding molding and trim designs, and for those that do not, we offer suggested designs that we feel work well with a particular tile series.

7. Do you offer design services?

We can help you with layout and color ideas, and estimate quantities. If you need additional assistance, we currently recommend you consult a design professional who can register as a Moore-Merkowitz trade professional.

8. I would like to use your tiles in my project. Can my interior designer purchase your tiles directly from you?

Yes. We are happy to partner with design professionals. Simply ask your designer to submit our online Trade Registration form and we’ll reach out to them with purchasing details.

9. What kind of applications are your tiles suitable for?

Our tiles can be used in all interior applications including kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls and sink areas, bath surrounds and showers, fireplace surround and hearths, and residential floors. M-M tiles are durable and easy to clean.

10. Can your tiles be used in wet applications?

Yes, our tiles are suitable for wet applications such as showers, tubs, sink areas and pools where freezing does not occur.

We recommend sealing the tiles when used in wet areas. We suggest that your installer follow the guidelines set forth by the Tile Council of North America for your specific conditions.

11. Can I use your tiles around my fireplace? Yes. Our tiles are naturally heat resistant. Historically, ceramic tiles have been used on fireplace surrounds and hearths for hundreds of years.

12. What size grout line do you recommend?

We recommend a 3/16” grout line. The square foot and linear foot calculations found in the Details section on each tile product page are based upon a 3/16” grout line included in the calculation.

13. How many additional tiles do I need to order for my installation?

We recommend ordering 5% -10% more tile than you think you need. This is a general rule of thumb when ordering tile. When setting tile, tiles may need to be cut in corner areas, ends of walls, mural insets, etc., depending on the layout. The remainders of the cut pieces may not be able to be used anywhere else, resulting in fewer tiles than needed. Having to place an additional order to complete your installation is time consuming, and depending on the color, may not be a perfect color match. Ultimately, we recommend ordering the 5-10% overage in your original order.

14. Do you have any grouting suggestions/recommendations?

Yes. We recommend sanded grout for all installations. As a general rule of thumb, when using a dark colored grout with a light colored glaze or vice versa, pre-seal the tile before grouting, and test a sample before proceeding. In addition, we suggest using a professional tile installer for your installation.

15. Do you have any specific recommendations when grouting your matte glazes?

Yes. Our matte glazes have a drier stone-like surface where grout can adhere to the glaze more easily. We recommend taping or sealing the tiles before grouting to significantly reduce cleanup time. Test a sample before grouting. We also recommend grouting small sections at a time and to clean-up each section immediately after grouting.

As a general rule of thumb, when using a dark colored grout with a light colored glaze or vice versa, pre-seal the tile before grouting to prevent staining, and test a sample before grouting.

16. Does direct sunlight effect the glaze colors?

No, our glazes do not fade in direct sunlight or over time.

17. How do I clean your tile?

When cleaning, use soap and water and a non-abrasive cloth. Any non-abrasive cleaner should be fine, just test on a small, inconspicuous area before using.

18. Can your tiles be used in exterior applications?

The Curated Field Series-Lancaster Collection is frost resistant and can be used for all exterior applications.

All other Moore-Merkowitz tile series tiles are not frost resistant and are not suitable for any outdoor use where freezing occurs, but are suitable for use on vertical exterior surfaces in locations that are not subject to frost or freezing.
